First UL Safety Certification Awarded for Solar Cells

Last week at the European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference in Valencia, Spain, SoloPower, Inc., a California-based manufacturer of photovoltaic solar cells announced that it had become the first in its industry to receive the right to display the Underwriters Laboratories’ “UL” safety certification mark.

SoloPower’s “thin-film” photovoltaic module was tested to UL’s 1703 standard at an independent laboratory and found to comply with the safety requirements set forth by the standard.

While some hailed the certification as a leap forward, others downplayed its significance. A representative of Ascent Solar, one of SoloPower’s competitors, stated “If you don’t have IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission safety certification) – then UL is just a symbol.”
